If you are already struggling with maggots, pouring a mixture of boiling water and bleach (or vinegar) directly over the infested site should eradicate them. leaving it for a few minutes will ensure that they are all dead. Once this has been completed you should pour the water down an outdour drain and clean out the inside of the bin. Using a strong disinfectant. After this process let the bin dry out completely before putting a new bin bag in. This is advised as; any moisture left will become a breeding ground for bacteria and flies.

To prevent any future infestations theres a few tricks that you can do:

1. Double bag any of your food waste if you are putting it into your main bin.

2. You can stop moisture building up by placing a generous amount of bicarbonte of soda or even pet litter into the bottom of the bin. This will also help to soak up any odours.

3. Flys tend to always linger around bins but to stop them wipe the rim of your bins with essential oils such as eucalyptus and peppermint.

4. Lastly, you shopuld keep your bins in shaded area as the heat will accelerate decomposition and attract maggots.
