Housing benifit Criteria
Housing benefit is a sum of money supplied by the governement to help tenants pay their rent if they're:
- Over state pension age:
- If they're single and over state pension age, individuals are able to make a new claim.
However if the individual has a partner; either:
- Both individuals have to be state pension age to make a claim
or
- if one has reached this age and started the claim before May 15th 2019
or
- Individuals are in supported, sheltered or temporary housing.
- In supported, sheltered or temporary housing:
- Claims are to be made if individuals are in tempoary housing for example, an B&B arranged by their council
- living in sheltered or supported housing
- If the individual is in a refuge as a survivor of domestic abuse.
This criteria has to be met for an individual to be able to access housing benifit. Alongside this critiera, there are also a few other things that need to be taken into account, which can prevent individuals from being able to claim this money. For example;
-Paying a mortage on their own home
-Living in the home of a close relative
-Already claiming Univeral credit ( unless in tempoary or supported housing)
-Full time student
-Residing in the UK as a EEA jobseeker
-Crown tenant
-Living with a partner that is already claiming housing benifit.
All of these points are key to wether an individual will be eligible for housing benifits. It is important that individuals undertstand this before they apply, helping them save time and widen their options. If you are an individual who is struggling to pay their rent or find a place to live due to your finacial situation, contact the governemnt to find out what help you can get.
