DIY ways to get rid of mice

24/01/2026

Based on common pest contol through at home solutions, it has been found that mint-flavoured mouthwash is able to act as a deterent to rodents such as mice. Mice have an extremly strong smell, therefore they stay away from sharp, intense smells like mint. Mounthwash has menthol and alcohol in it, both in which can overwhelm the mice and hide the smell of any food near-by, therefore steering them away from your home.

How to use it:

The mouthwash can be soaked up by a small cloth, cotton ball or cotton pad and be placed into areas that the mice have been seen before or you expect them to be hidng out. These places tend to be behind appliances, in corners, near holes or in cupboards.

Although mouthwash is strong, the sent still fades over time, this is why you should refresh them every 5 to 7 days to maintain effectiveness.

Disclaimer: This method is a temporary solution and should only be used as a short-term deterrent until the issue can be addressed permanently. There is currently no scientific research confirming the effectiveness of mouthwash as a rodent repellent.
